Authority in Religion The return to New Testament Christianity begins with a decision of authority. Authority creates and enforces the rules. Who or what can tell us what to do and how to do it, man or God? Throughout the Scriptures we are shown that God has already defined what he would have man to do and how He would have man to come to Him. Jesus made it very clear that we cannot establish our own authority and designs of what we think God requires of man, but must recognize that "All power in heaven and earth" has been given to Him. Recognizing that Jesus is the one who gave His life to establish the church, we must also recognize that He has the authority to design all aspects of it to His desires. Quite simply, He is the head of the church. The church is not a building or some obscure organization. It is the people who have been called from a life of worldliness into a life of following Christ. It is through following Christ that we receive the gift of eternal life. It is our desire to live as God would have us live. We believe this way of life is shown only in the Word of God and it serves as our standard and the foundation of our beliefs. |
